MLA / CE - Week 3: Social Networking Tools

I joined and/or explored Linkedin, Facebook, and MySpace sites (eVolver-Denver Public Library and Brooklyn College Library). It was quite an experience.

Assignment: Social Networking Sites (Linkedin, Facebook…)

Linkedin is an interesting site. I can see how it would appeal to many people. However, I found it very difficult to join.

Facebook, on the other hand, was easy to join, but I did not like the personal questions asked—I am glad I did not have to use my real name. I also found it easy to add applications such as UAB Catalog (Lister Hill Library), Pubface, PubMed, and WorldCat. Adding friends was not difficult either. While searching for colleagues, I was surprised to find several from my own library.

The problem I have with Facebook is the privacy issue. I can see one should be very careful about what one says on Facebook and on other social networking sites.

At the present time, I would not recommend that our library have a Facebook or a MySpace page. Perhaps as I read more about them, I will change my mind.
